The Porta di Castro was an ancient gate of Palermo.
History
It was built in 1620 to replace a previous door closed in 1420 (palace door). For the construction of the gate, the church of Santa Maria dell’Itra was demolished, through a decree of the then viceroy Francesco De Lemons, count of Castro. The archbishop of Palermo gave his assent as he contracted the construction of a new church at the expense of the Palermo senate. Subsequently over time the gate lost its function and was demolished to widen the street and build new houses
